Super "T" Testosterone: Review by Jonathan Lawson, IRONMAN Jan '00

There’s one miracle hormone that’s responsible for helping to enhance muscle mass, strength, fat loss, sexual performance, libido, brain function, immune system, metabolic rate, bone mass and recovery from injuries. As anyone who’s been involved with bodybuilding at all knows, that hormone is testosterone and there’s finally a book by a respected doctor—Karlis Ullis, M. D.—that explores and explains how to enhance your body’s production of it through the use of nutrition, exercises and supplements.

In first part of Super “T” Ullis gives a brief history of the dawn of testosterone boosters, including the beginnings of anabolic steroids as well as the advent of T boosters, or pro-hormones. He then goes into various minerals, food extracts, herbs, amino acids and hormone compounds that have been shown to play a supporting role as sex enhancers. After that interesting analysis he goes on to explain the use and advantages and drawbacks of testosterone and nor-testosterone precursors (pro-hormones), as well as the other T-boosters such as tribulus terrestris.

In the second part of Super “T” Ullis explains how to give your body a natural testosterone-boosting makeover. The first involves fat loss followed by a makeover for muscle gain. He provides extensive supplement regimens and detailed diet programs along with basic training guidelines.

Aside from fat loss and muscle building, the biochemistry of sex has a very high reliance on testosterone production, in both men and women. It’s not until you read some of the extensive information that you realize that testosterone is so important on so many levels. And, of course, for those who are lacking or just want to increase their sexual pleasure, there are several recipes for Super “T” Sexual Cocktails (supplement stacking for sexual enhancement) and the requisite questionnaire that let’s you know how you score on the yin and yang scale so that you can customize your cocktail. There are cocktails for both men and women, designed to help them in whatever yin or yang mode they may be. Stand back, there’s also a few that involve Viagra.

Dr. Ullis gives workout, supplement and meal programs that will help promote a pro-sexual lifestyle. And for those of you thinking that you’re in good health and promoting longevity with your weight training and cardiovascular exercise programs alone, think again. Apparently, sexual activity is a better marker for overall health. Of course, that doesn’t mean to stop the exercise programs, but I’m sure no one will mind using this other activity as an excuse to promote their health.

The next sections revolve around making a personal T-booster schedule and starts with a daily planner for a better body and better sex. Next, Ullis breaks down all of the fat-loss, muscle-gain and sexual-performance supplements with scores for effectiveness, recommended dosages and what effects to expect.

A section on nutrition is next and it has equations to help measure what your requirements are as well as how to estimate your bodyfat percentage. He follows that with an appendix that includes several tables that display the nutritional content of many typical food proportions as well as their origins. There are also some helpful tables with various meal ideas based on your own protein requirements. A second appendix lists several common prescription drugs that have been linked to sexual disfunction.

Pros: Excellent, up-to-date information on many of the best ways to naturally increase your body’s testosterone production. Information is geared toward both men and women.

Cons: Because it’s possible that an excessive increase in testosterone can have some negative effects, readers should not overlook some of the cautionary notes.
